ORANJESTAD, Aruba — Aruban media professional Oriana Wouters joined journalists from across the Kingdom of the Netherlands at the second Dutch Journalism Festival in Deventer.
Caribbean perspectives reach the festival
More than 1,000 journalists, media professionals and other participants attended the festival on September 18 and 19. A Caribbean delegation took part at the invitation of Fonds BJP, the Dutch fund for investigative journalism.
Wouters joined Rajesh Chintaman of Sint Maarten, Radinka Ustasia of Bonaire, Maarten van Gestel of the Netherlands and Emma van Bergeijk of the Netherlands for a panel on climate journalism. Journalist and author Milouska Meulens moderated the discussion.
Panel examines unequal climate impacts
The session focused on how journalists can report on a climate crisis whose effects are experienced differently across the Kingdom. Participants discussed shared challenges, professional approaches and the responsibility to place climate impacts in their local context.
A second session addressed mental health and peer support in journalism. The festival program also covered local reporting, artificial intelligence, journalistic ethics and cooperation.
The Aruba Dutch Journalism Festival participation was part of a broader effort to expand knowledge-sharing between Caribbean and European Dutch media professionals.
