The Aruba dog commission has held its first meeting, with Justice Minister Arthur Dowers opening work on proposals to address free-roaming dogs, 24ora reported on November 4. The remit covers both ownerless dogs and owned animals allowed to wander.
Agencies and animal groups represented
The commission includes DVG, the police, Animal Welfare Alliance Aruba, Luna Foundation, Animal Care Clinic, Bureau City Inspector and dog experts. Anke van Dijk chairs the group, with legal and administrative support from Rasheema Orie.
Proposals must address causes as well as risks
The stated aim is a coordinated, lasting approach that considers public safety, animal welfare and owner responsibility. The report identifies concerns including bites and traffic dangers. The first meeting does not amount to an adopted new law or an announcement of a mass removal programme; concrete solutions remain the commission’s work.
