A trade-union leader is calling for stronger Aruba construction oversight, more inspectors and renewed technical training as building activity continues across the island.
STA raises inspection concerns
Diego de Cuba of STA said the Department of Public Works, known as DOW, does not have enough personnel to inspect all projects currently under way. He urged the government to expand the service, reorganize inspections and create a more efficient system for enforcing construction and safety rules.
De Cuba said the concern involves both building quality and workplace safety. Stronger controls, he argued, could protect workers and reduce accident risks at construction sites.
Training and housing costs also cited
The union representative also pointed to a shortage of qualified workers. He linked that shortage partly to the loss of vocational schools and said Aruba has become increasingly dependent on workers brought from abroad.
According to the report, the combination of rapid construction growth, high demand and limited skilled labor is also affecting housing costs. De Cuba called for investment in vocational education alongside stronger supervision and a sustainable construction and housing policy.
