ORANJESTAD, Aruba — Aruba women’s national team player Aisse Gumbs has joined FC Groningen Vrouwen, returning to the Dutch city where she grew up after playing professionally in the Netherlands, Belgium and Greece.
The 29-year-old winger arrives from Panathinaikos FC and has joined head coach Atty Eelkema’s squad immediately. The move gives the Aruban international a new opportunity in Dutch football while bringing her career back to a place she considers home.
Aruban International Returns to Groningen
Aisse Gumbs FC Groningen is a natural homecoming story. Gumbs was born in Aruba but moved to Groningen when she was young. She played locally for GVAV and Oranje Nassau before continuing her development elsewhere in the Netherlands.
Her senior career later included spells with Sparta Rotterdam and Excelsior Rotterdam. Gumbs made her debut in the Dutch Women’s Eredivisie with Excelsior in 2022, an important step that established her at the country’s highest level.
She subsequently moved abroad, joining YLA, the women’s team of Club Brugge in Belgium, before continuing her career in Greece with Panathinaikos.
FC Groningen announced the transfer shortly before the summer transfer window closed. The club said Gumbs will add speed, dribbling ability and international experience to its attacking options. She will wear number 18.
Experience With Aruba’s National Team
Gumbs has represented Aruba internationally since 2022. Her experience across several European leagues gives the national team player a broad football background as she begins the next stage of her club career.
The signing also provides a visible example of an Aruban athlete progressing in European women’s football. For local players following similar ambitions, Gumbs’ route from Aruba to clubs in the Netherlands, Belgium and Greece demonstrates the opportunities that can develop through sustained competition abroad.
FC Groningen Vrouwen gains an experienced wide attacker who already knows the city and Dutch football. Gumbs, meanwhile, returns to familiar surroundings after her international club journey.
What Comes Next
Gumbs has joined the squad with immediate effect and will now work toward selection for FC Groningen’s upcoming fixtures. Her familiarity with Groningen and previous experience in Dutch competition may help ease the transition into the team.
The move is also notable for Aruba supporters, who will be able to follow one of the island’s national team players in a new chapter at a prominent Dutch club.
The official club announcement spells the player’s first name as Aisse. Some local reports used the spelling Aissee; ArubaNews.ca has followed FC Groningen’s official spelling.
