ORANJESTAD (AAN): On Sunday evening, Dutch philosopher Ad Verbrugge arrived in Aruba as one of the keynote speakers for the highly anticipated Ad Verbrugge Keynote Common Good Conference.

The Ad Verbrugge Keynote Common Good Conference will take place on January 30, 2026, at the Renaissance Wind Creek Conference Center and features an impressive lineup of speakers, with Ad Verbrugge’s keynote being one of the major highlights.

Ad Verbrugge, a Dutch philosopher, studied philosophy at Leiden University and earned his doctorate with a dissertation on Being and Time by Martin Heidegger, later published as De verwaarlozing van het zijnde (The Neglect of Being). Verbrugge became a senior lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where he taught social, cultural, and economic philosophy, gaining recognition as one of the best educators.

His work blends academic philosophy with real-world experience, using films, literature, and various media to better explain his ideas. With his book Tijd van onbehagen (2004), Ad Verbrugge gained wide recognition for his critique of Western society as a culture increasingly detached from traditional values. He became a public figure through his appearances on programs like Tegenlicht and Het Filosofisch Kwintet.

In his most recent works, including Staat van Verwarring (2013), Ad Verbrugge continues to explore themes of individualization and social fragmentation. In 2015, he co-founded the Ethos Center at the Vrije Universiteit, and in 2016, he was awarded the title of Officer in the Order of Oranje-Nassau. In 2018, he created the television series Onderstromen, where he engaged in conversations with people from the coast of the Netherlands on fundamental life questions.
