Local Spotlight (Carnival Edition): Meet Sergio Silva – Aruba’s Carnival Music Maestro

🎺 Sergio Silva: A Life in Music, Born in Carnival

If there’s one person who truly embodies the spirit of Aruba’s Carnival, it’s Sergio Silva. Born 43 years ago during Carnival season, Sergio has lived every beat of his life surrounded by music. From banging on silverware as a child to plucking the strings of a bass guitar, Sergio’s passion for sound started early and never stopped.

“I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t a musician,” Sergio says, laughing about how even dinner time turned into a jam session at home.

👣 Carnival Roots: From Tiny Dancer to Bass Guitar Devotee

Sergio’s Carnival journey began at just 6 years old, when he danced in the Esso Petrolera Carnival group. But it was the thunderous sounds of brass bands and steel pan ensembles that made a lasting impression.

He reminisces about the old-school asembo (ensemble) music, when performers filled Aruba’s streets with energy without the help of amplifiers. “That raw sound is something I truly miss,” he says.

🎸 A Self-Taught Star Turned Full-Time Musician

The drums were his first instrument, but it was the bass guitar that stole his heart at age 12. With no formal lessons, Sergio taught himself to play by mimicking songs on the radio—a true testament to his natural talent. He eventually went on to study music theory with Lucio Rivadeneina and drew inspiration from local legends like Roy Keteldijk, Chicho Kock, and Reno Steba.

Though he played with several well-known Aruban bands over the years, music remained a side gig for Sergio—until recently.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Family First, Music Always

With a wife and two daughters at the center of his world, Sergio was cautious about making music his full-time profession. For years, he worked as a Sea Trek instructor, keeping his passion on the side. But he never lost faith.

“I always believed the universe would guide me when the time was right—and it did.”

🎤 Rocking the Island: From Hard Rock Café to Carnival 65

Now fully committed to his craft, Sergio is an independent musician. You can catch him live every Wednesday at 9:30 PM at Hard Rock Café Aruba, playing classic rock with Robin and the Rebels.

And of course, Carnival season is when Sergio truly shines. This year marks his third with the band Madness, but he’s no stranger to the stage—having also performed with BMW, TIGO, and ATNG in past Carnival events.

When asked about his favorite Carnival parade, he admits: “I can’t pick just one—each has its own unique energy.”

🇦🇼 Why Sergio’s Story Matters

Sergio Silva’s journey is a reflection of Aruban culture, where music, tradition, and perseverance intersect. His love for Carnival, his commitment to family, and his ability to inspire through music make him a true local treasure.

Whether it’s under the bright lights of Carnival or in a cozy café with a bass in hand, Sergio brings the heartbeat of Aruba to life—one note at a time.
