🌿 Aruba’s Healing Foods: Nature’s Remedies and Local Flavors

VIEWS

Aruba is not only famous for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture but also for its natural healing foods. The island’s culinary traditions are deeply rooted in local ingredients and plants that are said to boost immunity, heal ailments, and promote overall well-being. Whether you’re enjoying traditional dishes or sipping on herbal teas, you’ll find that these “healing foods” are an essential part of Aruba’s old-world traditions.

🌱 Healing Plants and Their Benefits

On Aruba, brujas (local healers) have passed down knowledge of herbal remedies for generations. Here are some common plants you’ll encounter in the island’s healing traditions:

  • Yerbe di Hole: A basil used in cooking, particularly in fish soup or goat stew. It’s believed to enhance flavor and remove the gamey taste from meats.

  • Yerbe Sali: A local grass used to flush kidney stones and gallstones. It’s combined with eucalyptus and sea grape to relieve fever and flu.

  • Rabo di Cabay (Horse Tail): The bark of this tree is brewed into a drink to cleanse the blood and improve circulation.

  • Betonica: A plant with purple flowers, its root is brewed to treat anemia, producing a refreshing red beverage that can be enjoyed hot or cold.

🌿 Aloe and Cacti: Nature’s Heal-All

Aruba’s aloe and cacti have been used for generations to treat both external and internal health concerns:

  • Aloe: The gel from aloe leaves is applied directly to burns to promote healing. Many islanders eat aloe raw or with honey to maintain overall good health.

  • Cadushi (Organ Pipe Cactus): The fruit of the cadushi is rich in Vitamin C and refreshing, while also offering numerous health benefits such as boosting immunity and aiding in colon cleansing.

  • Prickly Pear: The tuna cactus fruit, known as prickly pear, is popular for easing indigestion and is packed with vitamins and minerals that help lower cholesterol, stabilize blood sugar, and promote digestive health.

🍲 Aruban Cooking and Local Remedies

Aruba’s cuisine and remedies are intertwined, with local cooks and healers often using these plants to prepare hearty dishes and natural remedies. The island’s herbal teas and home-cooked meals reflect the health-conscious nature of the culture, and they continue to be passed down through the generations.

🍽️ Must-Try Dishes:

  • Fish soup: Enhanced with Yerbe di Hole for a fresh, aromatic flavor.

  • Cabrito Stew: A flavorful goat stew, often made with a variety of local herbs.

  • Prickly pear pulp: Mashed and consumed for digestive health.
