ORANJESTAD (AAN): The Gele Koorts Muskiet Bestrijding (GKMB) department reports fewer mosquito-related complaints so far this year compared to previous years, though the peak season with the most complaints usually falls in October through December.

Recently, most calls have come from areas around the bridge, especially San Nicolas, as well as Santa Cruz.

GKMB Director Luis Chong advises the public to be vigilant for symptoms of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. The first sign is typically a sudden high fever, accompanied by headaches, pain behind the eyes, muscle and body aches, and intense fatigue.

“If you notice one or more of these symptoms, visit your doctor to get tested, which will help us assess the situation island-wide,” Chong said.

Doctors can notify the Department of Public Health (DBZ) to help contain the spread. GKMB can then send workers to inspect affected homes and apply mosquito spray where needed to prevent further cases.
