Aruba police allowances and other employment benefits should be modernised to reflect present-day costs, police union SPA vice-president Francel Bernardus said in comments reported by 24ora on October 19.
Child and meal benefits questioned
Bernardus said the child allowance is 55 florins per child each month and has not been adjusted in 40 years. He also questioned the 18.85-florin meal voucher paid when officers work overtime, arguing that it barely covers a basic takeaway meal.
Standby and healthcare payments highlighted
According to Bernardus, standby compensation is around 60 florins per duty period, or approximately 180 florins monthly. He compared police benefits with those at other employers and said assistance with dental care and glasses also needs attention.
Union links benefits to staffing
Bernardus said officers work overtime amid personnel shortages. He presented fairer compensation as important for retaining staff and attracting young people to policing. The report describes the union’s demands, not an approved benefits increase.
