Former Aruba parliamentarian Otmar Oduber has presented a manifesto to Parliament calling for equal legal protections for politicians and former politicians on the island when they face judicial investigations within the Dutch Kingdom. The Otmar Oduber manifesto frames the issue as one of equal treatment while acknowledging that public officials must remain accountable under the law.
Manifesto Seeks Equal Legal Safeguards
According to Oduber’s statement reported by 24ora, the initiative follows a legal process he began about a year and a half ago while serving in Parliament. He argues that investigations involving politicians should rest on serious indications and sufficient evidence, and that legal safeguards should prevent possible abuse without placing officeholders above the law.
Oduber Links Appeal to a Wider Kingdom Question
Oduber also referred to Aruba’s Landsverordening Instelling Ministeries, which Parliament approved last December by 15 votes to nine. He interprets the measure as relevant to equality within the Dutch Kingdom and to whether Aruban citizens and political representatives receive protections comparable to those available in the Netherlands.
The former parliamentarian said the manifesto is intended to draw attention to what he considers unequal legal treatment, separate from the personal case that is continuing before the Hoge Raad through cassation. These assertions and interpretations are Oduber’s; no independent ruling on the broader discrimination claim was reported.
