An Aruba weapon images sentence has resulted in a 19-year-old receiving six months in prison, three of them suspended, following a case involving photographs found on a smartphone.
The case against the defendant identified as Q.P. was heard on August 25. Prosecutors said 17 images resembling firearms had been stored on the phone between April 27 and June 3 and sought a 24-month sentence, including six months suspended.
Court found doubt over most images
The court found the investigation and phone search lawful but concluded there was insufficient proof that most photographed objects were real firearms. It determined that three images appeared to show real weapons that could be used to threaten someone.
The Aruba weapon images sentence includes three years of probation. The phone containing the images was confiscated, while other phones and a bag were ordered returned.
