Aruba agricultural water shortage forces santa rosa to reduce deliveries

The Aruba agricultural water shortage is forcing Santa Rosa to reduce water deliveries to farmers as drought conditions continue to place pressure on dams, wells and local agricultural production.

Randy Maduro, public relations representative for Santa Rosa, explained that dry conditions are creating significant challenges for both farmers and livestock producers.

In some cases, producers requesting two or three truckloads of water are currently receiving only one because Santa Rosa does not have enough dam water available.

Maduro acknowledged that the reduced deliveries can create frustration, but asked producers to understand the limited supply.

He encouraged farmers to use alternative water sources whenever possible to keep crops alive until significant rainfall replenishes the dams.

These alternatives can include collected water from washing machines or air-conditioning systems, provided it can be safely used for the intended plants.

Farmers with access to agricultural water meters are also being encouraged to temporarily rely more heavily on that supply.

Production Could Be Affected

Maduro said the water shortage could reduce agricultural production if dry conditions continue.

He encouraged commercial growers and those with agricultural water connections to focus on keeping existing crops alive while waiting for stronger rainfall.

Santa Rosa is hoping for sufficient rain to refill its dams and ease pressure on water deliveries.

Several Wells Are Also Unavailable

The situation is being complicated by problems affecting several wells traditionally used for agriculture.

The well in Savaneta is currently unavailable because of an unresolved issue that Santa Rosa is still working to address.

The Pavia well is also out of service because replacement parts are needed.

Maduro said repairs are underway and indicated that the Pavia facility could become available again within several weeks.

The well in Noord is also out of service, while the nearby dam remains largely empty and has vegetation growing inside it.

Santa Rosa expects cleaning work will eventually be required, although the area must become somewhat drier before crews can properly access and clear it.

Farmers Asked to Conserve Water

Santa Rosa is asking producers to use water as efficiently as possible while the dry period continues.

Maduro recommended collecting reusable household water where appropriate and using drip-irrigation systems to reduce unnecessary consumption.

He said water-saving measures can help farmers keep plants alive while preserving limited supplies.

The Aruba agricultural water shortage will continue to affect Santa Rosa’s delivery capacity until rainfall improves dam levels and repairs restore access to additional agricultural water sources.
