Aruba Begins Restoration of Historic Willem III Tower

ORANJESTAD (AAN) – The Government of Aruba has officially announced the start of restoration work on the historic Willem III Tower, one of the island’s most iconic landmarks.

During the announcement, Prime Minister Mike Eman emphasized the importance of preserving Aruba’s historical heritage, explaining that Fort Zoutman and the Willem III Tower together represent a fundamental symbol of Aruba’s history.

According to Eman, although many people see the fort and tower as one structure, Fort Zoutman was built first and the tower was later added as an integral part of the complex.

Fort Zoutman, recognized as Aruba’s oldest building, once served several government functions including customs, immigration, and parliamentary activities.

The restoration project will be carried out with full respect for the site’s historical value, using original materials, authentic colors, and designs faithful to the original structure.

The project will proceed in phases, beginning with maintenance and restoration of the tower itself, followed by repairs to surrounding walls and structures within the complex.

The initiative forms part of a broader government plan to preserve important monuments across Aruba, including future restoration efforts involving other historic buildings.

Authorities also highlighted the role of Monumentenbureau Aruba, whose expertise will help ensure the historical authenticity of the restoration process.
