ORANJESTAD (AAN): Aruba has highlighted its first participation in the BESTLIFE2030 Aruba Project during the Ministerial Conference of the Overseas Countries and Territories Association (OCTA), hosted on the island as part of the 21st Overseas Countries and Territories–European Union Forum.
The conference brought together ministers and representatives from various overseas countries and territories to discuss strategic priorities and cooperation with the European Union, focusing on sustainable development, resilience, and community well-being.
A key topic during the conference was the BESTLIFE2030 Aruba Project, which emphasizes sustainability, environmental protection, and quality of life. The program, supported by the European Union and coordinated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), has a total value of over €30 million and will run for approximately eight years.
According to Cristina Romero, Senior Program Manager at IUCN, the initiative not only provides funding but also strengthens local organizations by equipping them with the tools needed to implement impactful environmental projects. She noted that overseas territories like Aruba have rich biodiversity but also face challenges such as climate change and pressure on natural resources.
Aruba recently secured its first project under the program, known as REEFLECT, with participation from the University of Aruba. Several other projects are also being developed across the Caribbean region.
Prime Minister Mike Eman emphasized that this initiative aligns with Aruba’s long-term vision to serve as a strategic bridge between Europe and the Americas. He highlighted that Aruba’s geographic position offers strong potential for economic development and sustainable international cooperation.
The BESTLIFE2030 Aruba Project reflects Aruba’s commitment to turning vision into action by strengthening environmental protection and international collaboration for a sustainable future.
