Call for Fair Agreement for SKOA Cleaning Workers in Aruba

ORANJESTAD (AAN): A long-standing issue affecting a large group of cleaning workers at SKOA remains unresolved, according to Magaly Brito of SEPPA. She emphasized that these hardworking men and women receive very low wages despite carrying a heavy workload.

Brito explained that the situation has worsened as some workers have chosen to leave due to poor conditions, increasing the burden on those who remain. SKOA has not hired additional staff, largely due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the issue.

The government currently subsidizes SKOA workers, but legal cases related to the matter are still pending in court, causing further delays in reaching a solution. Brito stated that SEPPA believes the case has already been effectively decided and now requires clarity on whether the government owes SKOA or vice versa. This clarity is essential to ensure that workers receive proper payment.

The issue dates back to 2019 when a decision was made to change how subsidies were allocated to the foundation responsible for paying these workers. Brito noted that there is still room for the government to adjust policies and increase funding to ensure that workers’ rights are respected.

In discussions with Minister of Education Gerlien Croes, it was indicated that they must wait for the outcome of legal proceedings. However, Brito stressed that the SKOA Cleaning Workers Aruba situation continues to negatively impact low-income workers who are struggling with heavy workloads and insufficient salaries.

She urged the Government of Aruba to take immediate action and sit down at the table to reach a fair agreement. According to Brito, the SKOA Cleaning Workers Aruba issue is not new and has been affecting workers for years, making it urgent to find a just and lasting solution.
