Aruba home safety measures to prevent fire and disaster

ORANJESTAD (AAN): Francis Toussaint, Public Relations Officer of Brandweer Aruba, has emphasized the importance of home safety measures to prevent fire and other disasters. He stated that even a moment of negligence can lead to significant damage and tragedy. Preventing such situations is always better than dealing with the aftermath. Toussaint urged Arubans to take responsibility every day to protect their families, homes, and future.

In an interview with DIARIO, he shared a brief list of preventive measures that should be taken to avoid unfortunate accidents. One of the most important items he highlighted was the installation of smoke detectors. These devices are designed to alert residents promptly, especially when they are asleep, allowing them time to exit the house safely and contact Brandweer for help.

Toussaint further explained that smoke detectors should be installed in every room, not just in the kitchen. If a fire starts in a room without a smoke detector, the smoke can fill the space before the signal reaches other parts of the house, which can have fatal consequences.

Additionally, fire extinguishers must be available, and it is recommended that they be placed near refrigerators, not next to stoves. Having an escape plan for all house members is equally important. Toussaint reminded residents that 911 is the emergency number in Aruba, and it should only be used for serious situations.

He also made a serious appeal to parents to supervise their children using phones with credit, as false calls to 911 can disrupt emergency services and put lives in danger. Furthermore, all residents, including those working or caring for others in the home, should know the exact address of the house and have a contact number available.

Safety is not an option but a responsibility of the entire community. Every preventive step we take makes the difference between a scare and a tragedy. Act with awareness, prepare with wisdom, and let safety become part of your life every day.
