ORANJESTAD (AAN): A technical study conducted by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has provided the Aruba Government with a strategic framework to enhance the island’s correctional facility improvement and operational efficiency.

The study’s findings recommend the development of a modern correctional facility designed to improve detention standards, strengthen rehabilitation services, and introduce a more efficient operational model for Aruba’s correctional system.

The proposed facility will incorporate sustainable and resilient principles to ensure long-term operational efficiency. The facility will have a lifespan of 40 years and includes flexibility to adapt to demographic changes and evolving needs within Aruba’s correctional system.

In addition to improving detention services, the project will bring significant benefits to KIA staff and other professionals in the justice sector, strengthening security at the workplace, simplifying operational processes, and improving staff efficiency. The plan also includes specialized training and capacity-building initiatives to ensure that KIA staff are properly prepared to operate and manage the new correctional facility according to high standards.

This Aruba correctional facility improvement initiative will also strengthen coordination among various actors in Aruba’s justice system, including security agencies and courts, contributing to a more integrated and effective justice system.
