Explains the Delay in Payment Receipts for 2026 Car Taxes

In a recent interview with DIARIO, Meverly Romano of the Department of Taxation (DIMP) provided clarification regarding the delay in payment receipts for 2026 car taxes. According to her explanation, anyone who pays online via bank transfer must submit a request to receive the official payment receipt from the Department of Taxation.

Ms. Romano explained that DIMP introduced the online payment system some time ago, allowing both businesses and private individuals to pay their taxes electronically. The reason for introducing this system was due to the large number of overdue car numbers. At one point, many people were visiting DIMP to make their tax payments, resulting in long lines extending to the parking lot and beyond.

The payment process remains the same. Clients make payments via bank transfer, fill out a digital form available on the DIMP website, and upload the bank payment receipt. Afterward, the department processes the payment receipt.

Ms. Romano mentioned that many clients still have outstanding payments for previous years. In such cases, they are not permitted to pay for the 2026 car number tax until the outstanding balance is fully cleared.

Some clients have been confused by the system. They pay via the bank and enter “2026” in the payment description, even though they have outstanding debts from previous years.

However, Ms. Romano emphasized that the system works in such a way that when a person makes a payment, even if they specify “2026,” the department first applies the payment to any outstanding balances before processing the receipt for the current year.

This, she explained, is the reason for the delay in payment receipts for 2026 car taxes, as the department must check the client’s payment history before processing the receipt. Once this is done, the client receives the payment receipt via email.
