MEP Demands Clarity on Aruba Offshore Gas Information

The MEP party is calling for full transparency regarding Aruba offshore gas after requesting an urgent parliamentary meeting with the state-owned company Compania Arubano di Petroleo (CAP).

Over the weekend, the MEP parliamentary faction formally asked Parliament President Marlon Sneek to convene an emergency session involving CAP. The request follows concerns about the lack of information shared with Parliament regarding discussions between CAP and Armstrong about possible Aruba offshore gas exploration activities.

The request comes after information shared during a meeting with the San Nicolas Business Association on February 5, 2026, where it was revealed that there may be two potential Aruba offshore gas fields near the island. These fields could be developed profitably within a relatively short timeframe, depending on decisions made by the Aruba government.

MEP faction leader Evelyn Wever-Croes stated that it is unacceptable for Parliament and the Aruban community to remain uninformed about developments of this magnitude. She emphasized that transparency is a democratic obligation, especially when strategic decisions could shape the country’s economic future.

According to Wever-Croes, Aruba stands at a critical crossroads. The island’s economy should not remain almost entirely dependent on tourism. In times of global uncertainty, Aruba must seriously explore new and sustainable economic pillars, including Aruba offshore gas, through informed and transparent debate.

MEP is requesting a public parliamentary meeting to clarify the nature of discussions with Armstrong, CAP’s role and findings, Aruba’s offshore energy policy, and whether Aruba is sending signals that it is “off the market” for Aruba offshore gas development. The party warns that failing to act could mean losing important opportunities.

Wever-Croes stressed that any decision on Aruba offshore gas must be made transparently, consciously, and with full parliamentary involvement, calling for immediate action rather than delays.
