ORANJESTAD (AAN):
On Monday, Prime Minister of Sint Maarten, Luc Mercelina, arrived in Aruba and was warmly received by Prime Minister of Aruba, Mike Eman. During his visit, Premier Mercelina expressed his gratitude for the invitation and emphasized the importance of strengthening Aruba Sint Maarten regional cooperation between the Dutch Caribbean islands.

Premier Eman expressed that the visit was not just symbolic but a significant step in collaborating on common challenges faced by small islands in a dynamic global landscape. He noted that it had been over 15 years since Premier Mercelina’s last visit to Aruba. The Common Good Conference provides an excellent opportunity for reflection and dialogue on shared future goals.

Mercelina shared that historically, islands have focused on individual survival and independence. However, he emphasized that the current global challenges—such as climate change, geopolitical shifts, and economic vulnerabilities—require regional collaboration and alliances. Aruba, Sint Maarten, and other islands in the region form part of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) group, facing common challenges and needing to share knowledge, resources, and expertise to achieve sustainability and resilience.

According to Premier Eman, the Common Good Conference is a positive step toward fostering these connections, providing a platform to share resources and ideas that will improve the quality of life for citizens in the region.

In closing, Premier Mercelina expressed his honor to be in Aruba and his desire for the conference to be a fruitful dialogue. He also extended an invitation for Aruba to continue strengthening its relationship with Sint Maarten, recognizing that many of Aruba’s achievements have been made possible through cooperation, solidarity, and contributions from Sint Maarten residents who have shaped Aruba’s history and development.
