Workers in Several Sectors Not Properly Registered with SVb, Says Mediator Anselmo Pontilius

ORANJESTAD (AAN): According to labor mediator Anselmo Pontilius, there is still a significant lack of transparency when it comes to workers understanding the true situation of the companies they work for.

Pontilius explained in an interview with DIARIO that not all companies openly present their financial and operational realities, making it difficult for employees to fully understand how businesses operate—particularly when it comes to respecting workers’ rights.

Although improvements have been made over time, Pontilius emphasized that it remains a fact that many workers across various sectors are still not properly registered with the Social Insurance Bank (SVb).

“If workers are not registered with SVb, it means that employers are not paying pension contributions, AZV health insurance premiums, or other mandatory social security payments—and we all know the consequences of that,” Pontilius stated.

He stressed that this issue requires much deeper attention. Pontilius also referred to recent government decisions aimed at granting work permits to a large group of undocumented workers, raising important questions about employer compliance in previous years.

He questioned whether some employers may have deducted amounts from workers’ salaries without transferring them to the appropriate authorities. This could include unpaid pension contributions, AZV premiums, and AOV payments, even if income tax obligations may have changed due to amendments in tax laws.

“There are cases where companies are simply not fulfilling their legal responsibilities,” Pontilius concluded.
