ORANJESTAD (AAN): The final deadline to pay the first half of the 2026 motor vehicle tax is February 2, 2026, according to the Department of Taxation. Although the standard deadline is January 31, the date has been extended this year because January 31 falls on a Saturday.

The Department of Taxation confirmed that no new license plates will be issued for 2026. The current blue-and-white license plates, issued in 2025, remain valid through 2029, and motorists must continue using these plates.

There has been no change in motor vehicle tax rates for 2026. Taxpayers who are unsure of the amount due are advised to consult their vehicle registration document issued by the Department of Taxation.

Existing vehicle owners are not required to pay for license plates, as no new plates are being issued. However, newly registered vehicles requiring a new plate must pay Afl. 14, while mopeds (brommers) must pay Afl. 10 for plates.

Payments can be made at the main office in Camacuri, as well as at MFA Noord, MFA Paradera, MFA Santa Cruz, MFA Savaneta, and the San Nicolas Post Office building. Payments at all Department of Taxation offices are accepted by debit card only. Cash payments are permitted only at Camacuri for non-commercial individuals aged 60 and older and those receiving government assistance.

It is important to note that motor vehicle tax for 2026 cannot be paid if there are outstanding debts from previous years. Additionally, payment arrangements are not permitted for overdue motor vehicle taxes from years prior to 2026.

Online Payments

Taxpayers are encouraged to use online bank payments via the Bill Payment system, which allows for quick and accurate processing. Payments made through Aruba Bank, Banco di Caribe, or Caribbean Mercantile Bank are typically registered within one business day, while payments from other banks may take up to five business days.

For payments not made via Bill Payment, taxpayers must include a detailed description to ensure proper processing, including:
personal number – tax year – license plate number
Example: 50001234-2026-A97345

If a taxpayer has outstanding debts from previous years, payments will first be applied to those debts, with any remaining balance applied to the 2026 tax. When paying for multiple license plates, separate bank transactions must be completed for each vehicle.

Requesting a Payment Receipt

Taxpayers using partial payment services and paying via bank transfer may request a receipt online after completing the final payment by visiting impuesto.aw and selecting Digital Forms > Motor Vehicle Tax Receipt, then following the instructions.

Late Payment Penalties

Payments received after February 2, 2026, or payments made on that date after the bank’s cut-off time, will be considered late. Cut-off times can be verified directly with the bank.

Late payments are subject to a penalty of 50% of the unpaid tax amount, and the Department of Taxation will issue an additional assessment.

Example:

  • Motor vehicle tax: Afl. 150

  • Late payment penalty: Afl. 75

  • Total due: Afl. 225

With the deadline approaching and offices expected to become very busy, the Department of Taxation strongly advises taxpayers to pay their motor vehicle tax as early as possible and avoid waiting until the last moment.
