Joran van der Sloot, the man who confessed to killing American teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba, reportedly attempted to take his own life while serving time in a high-security prison in Peru.
According to Peruvian newspaper La República, the 38-year-old was found on Saturday hanging from a piece of blanket inside his cell at Challapalca Prison, one of Peru’s most notorious maximum-security facilities. Prison guards discovered him while delivering breakfast. Authorities said the incident appeared to be a possible suicide attempt.
Van der Sloot was taken to the prison infirmary, where he is reported to be in stable condition. Officials stated that he will remain under medical observation due to concerns about his mental health.
The Dutch national is currently serving a 28-year sentence for the 2010 murder of his former girlfriend, Stefany Flores Ramírez, who was beaten to death in a hotel room in Lima, Peru. He later received an additional 18-year sentence after being convicted in 2023 for drug trafficking while in prison, extending his incarceration until 2045.
The case remains closely tied to Aruba, where Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old student from Alabama, disappeared during a school trip in 2005. Van der Sloot was the last known person seen with her. In 2023, he confessed to murdering Holloway and disposing of her body in the Caribbean Sea, though he was never charged due to the statute of limitations in Aruba having expired.
He made the confession as part of a plea deal related to extorting Holloway’s parents. In 2010, van der Sloot demanded money in exchange for information about their daughter’s disappearance, providing false details after receiving a partial payment.
Natalee Holloway’s body has never been recovered, and her case remains one of the most high-profile crimes associated with Aruba.
