Curaçao and Aruba Launch Development of Ferry Connection Between the Islands

Curaçao and Aruba have officially taken the first steps toward developing a ferry connection between the two islands, marking a significant milestone in strengthening economic and social ties through sustainable maritime cooperation.

The initiative was formally launched by Minister Roderick Middelhof, Curaçao’s Minister of Economic Development, and Minister Geoffrey Wever, Aruba’s Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs, and the Primary Sector. The ferry connection is seen as an essential step toward enhanced regional integration, mobility, and long-term maritime collaboration.

The Councils of Ministers of both countries have approved the Action Plan, and the Netherlands has also approved funding through the Landspakket, making subsidies available for the first phase of the project.

Feasibility Study and Public Tender

The project includes a joint feasibility study, covering preparation and execution of a public tender. The goal is to attract a qualified ferry operator capable of providing a reliable and future-proof connection between Aruba and Curaçao.

In the coming period, a series of technical, economic, and environmental analyses will be conducted, along with structured consultations with key stakeholders. If results are positive, the process will move forward with a public tender, with the aim of awarding the contract to an operator in 2026.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

“This project reflects our ambition to strengthen and expand economic and tourism cooperation within the region,” said Minister Roderick Middelhof of Curaçao. “A ferry connection between our islands is not just a means of transport, but a bridge toward sustainable growth and stronger regional ties.”

Minister Geoffrey Wever of Aruba added:
“I am particularly pleased with this joint project developed together with Curaçao and the Netherlands. A strong ferry connection for both passengers and cargo will bring direct benefits to our economy and our citizens. Regional cooperation is becoming increasingly important, especially in light of geopolitical developments in our region.
