Oranjestad (AAN): On Sunday, the Royal Netherlands Navy supply ship Zr.Ms. Den Helder departed the Caribbean region and began its return journey to the Netherlands.

The Navy’s newest logistics support vessel had been operating in Caribbean waters since October, where it underwent a series of operational and technical trials. The ship is now returning to the Netherlands to continue its scheduled preparation and readiness process for 2026.

After port visits to Norfolk and New York, the Dutch Ministry of Defence decided last week that the vessel could return to the Caribbean region. As an additional precaution, Den Helder remained available for refueling support duties. The Ministry of Defence has since transferred this temporary role to other assets, allowing Den Helder to proceed back to the Netherlands.

Despite the ship’s departure, the Netherlands will maintain a naval presence in the Caribbean, with vessels such as Zr.Ms. Groningen and Zr.Ms. Pelikaan remaining active in the region. The Kingdom of the Netherlands also continues to have transport and logistical capabilities available within the Caribbean.

If all goes according to plan, the crew of Den Helder is expected to be able to celebrate Christmas at home. After the holiday period, the Royal Netherlands Navy will continue the ship’s final preparation phase as scheduled.

Successful Warm-Climate Trials Completed

Zr.Ms. Den Helder was officially commissioned into the Royal Netherlands Navy on October 1, 2025, after which crew training and operational preparations began. The vessel successfully completed warm-water trials in the Caribbean, which formed an important part of its preparation program.

The high humidity and warm sea temperatures provided ideal conditions to test how the ship and its systems perform under tropical operating environments. Following Christmas, the Navy will proceed with the next phase of preparations, including cold-weather trials, after which the vessel is expected to be fully operational.
