December is a season filled with activities, celebrations, Christmas gatherings, and plenty of food. Jasmira Mora, Coordinator of POH, is reminding the public of the importance of celebrating responsibly, especially when it comes to food and alcohol consumption during the holiday season.
According to Ms. Mora, celebrating is an important tradition for all Arubans, but patients in particular should remain mindful of their health during these festive days. One key recommendation is to limit alcohol consumption, as alcohol can interact negatively with certain medications.
She emphasized the importance of taking medications on time, even when attending social gatherings. For example, consuming foods high in salt may cause discomfort or health issues for some individuals. To avoid problems, patients are advised to either bring their medication with them or take it before leaving home.
Ms. Mora also highlighted specific guidance for people who use insulin, reminding them never to skip doses and not to leave insulin in a car, as heat can reduce its effectiveness.
Portion control is another important factor. She encouraged people to eat smaller portions and avoid overeating, noting that it is not necessary to consume an entire ayaca or a full plate of food in one sitting.
“Paying attention to these small details is very important,” Ms. Mora stressed. “People’s health must always come first. POH does not want to limit anyone from enjoying the holidays, but celebrations should be done in moderation and with awareness of one’s health.”
