Aruba Encourages Travelers to Take the “Aruba Promise” — A Commitment to Protect the Island’s Future

Aruba is asking visitors to do more than enjoy its beaches and sunshine — the island is inviting them to make a meaningful promise.

Travel has always contained an unspoken understanding: tourists benefit from a destination, but they also share responsibility in preserving its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and the communities that make it unique. As tourism continues to grow across the Caribbean, Aruba is taking a proactive approach with a new initiative that clearly defines what mindful, responsible travel should look like.

A Simple Promise With a Big Purpose

Aruba has launched the Aruba Promise, a visitor-centered sustainability pledge encouraging travelers to approach the island with greater awareness and respect. The initiative outlines expectations for responsible behavior and highlights how individual choices can positively affect Aruba’s long-term environmental health.

The campaign is built on three core principles:

  • Adopting a mindful guest mindset
  • Reducing personal environmental footprint
  • Moving at a slower, more intentional pace while exploring the island

Tourism officials say these values reflect the spirit of the Aruban community and are increasingly essential to protecting the island’s fragile ecosystems.

Protecting Nature Through Everyday Choices

The Aruba Promise encourages visitors to admire wildlife from a distance, avoid disturbing plants, refrain from stacking rocks or taking shells, and use mineral-based sunscreen to protect coral reefs.

Travelers are also urged to:

  • Explore beyond resort areas
  • Support local businesses
  • Avoid single-use plastics
  • Conserve water and electricity — both limited resources on a small island

Supporting Existing Environmental Protections

Aruba’s government has already taken significant steps to safeguard the environment, including banning plastic bags, disposable utensils, and confetti, and creating strict protections for sea turtle nesting beaches.

The Aruba Promise is designed to complement these policies by engaging visitors directly and integrating sustainability into the tourism experience.

Shaping Aruba’s Future Together

Officials say the initiative serves as both an environmental tool and a communication strategy that positions Aruba as a destination committed to long-term stewardship. By focusing on the cumulative impact of individual choices, the Aruba Promise helps reduce strain on coral reefs, coastal habitats, and the island’s desert landscapes.

The ultimate goal is to protect Aruba’s natural character — ensuring that One Happy Island remains vibrant for generations to come — while advancing an ongoing global conversation about shared responsibility between travelers and the destinations they visit.
