Unfortunately, the Overall State of Aruba’s Infrastructure Is Not Where It Should BeMinister Rene Herde Addresses Press on Urgent Challenges

During a press presentation, Minister of Infrastructure, Energy, and Telecommunications Rene Herde provided an update on the current situation of Aruba’s infrastructure and housing sector.

The minister stated that, unfortunately, the general condition of Aruba’s infrastructure is far from acceptable. A comprehensive evaluation is needed to assess the island’s current infrastructure systems. Many roads and neighborhoods are suffering from poor mobility, lack of structural maintenance, and declining quality.

There are opportunities to develop new residential neighborhoods, as well as integrate relevant training materials into schools in areas connected to infrastructure and construction. Aruba may also implement Dutch best practices in planning and executing innovative housing projects.

Housing Demand Exceeds Availability

The minister highlighted that housing demand has increased sharply, far surpassing current availability. For social housing alone, there are over 4,000 applications, with 50% coming from residents aged 55 and older. Additionally, many young people and families are seeking new homes that are both high-quality and affordable.

These challenges directly impact quality of life and Aruba’s economic growth.

Government Priorities

The government’s priority is to introduce:

  • New collaboration models
  • Expanded access to housing funds
  • Modern construction methods to accelerate the development of new homes

Minister Herde emphasized his goal of creating a system that enables Arubans to achieve homeownership, ensuring that locals have access to stable, affordable housing.
