Parliament Accused of Taking an Anti-Democratic and Dictatorial PathNovember 17, 2025

Tensions within the Parliament of Aruba continue to rise. Eduard Pieters, Member of Parliament for the PPA faction, has openly denounced the way the President of Parliament is handling public debate sessions—calling it disrespectful, non-transparent, and a threat to Aruba’s democratic principles.

According to Pieters, what happened on Thursday morning was not just a difference of opinion, but a systematic lack of respect toward the 13 labor unions representing Aruba’s workforce, as well as an attempt to silence voices that do not align with the majority.

Late Invitations Called ‘Disrespectful’

Pieters explained that the 13 unions were expected to attend a public parliamentary meeting scheduled for Thursday at 8:30 AM, but the official invitation arrived far too late. “I received the invitation Wednesday around 1 PM for a meeting the next morning at 8:30 AM. This is extremely unprofessional and disrespectful,” he said.

Many union leaders work in both public and private sectors, meaning they must request approval to leave work. “How can they arrange all that in less than a day? The President knows this very well. It seems more like a tactic—send the invitation late, then blame the unions for not showing up,” Pieters stated.

The unions have clearly expressed their desire for real dialogue, but the chaotic and inconsiderate process has raised serious concerns about transparency and respect.

Accusations of Anti-Democratic Behavior

Pieters went further, accusing the President of Parliament of creating a dictatorial and censor-driven environment. “Every time I try to speak, he shuts off my microphone. This is unacceptable. As a Member of Parliament, I have the right to request a point of order, and the President has the obligation to give me the floor,” he said.

He also claimed the President selectively chooses which MPs may speak, undermining balance and fairness within the legislative body. “This is not just against me—it’s against the voice of the people I represent,” Pieters emphasized.

According to him, these actions amount to abuse of power, intentional censorship of the opposition, and a direct assault on public trust.

A Warning About the Direction of Parliament

Pieters concluded with a strong message:
“We are witnessing a Parliament that is losing its essence, its respect, and its independence. If a President can silence the voice of the people, then democracy becomes nothing more than decoration.”

The PPA faction will continue to stand with the 13 labor unions and all Arubans who believe in transparency, respect, and genuine participation.

“Aruba cannot continue down a path where microphones are shut off for the opposition and doors are closed to workers. The house of the people must remain open—because a democracy without a voice is simply a dictatorship with a different face.”
