Several Aruban Students in the Netherlands Desperate to Return HomeFinding Housing Has Become Extremely Difficult

The housing situation for Aruban students in the Netherlands remains unresolved in several areas, leaving many of them increasingly desperate. Some students are now seriously considering abandoning their studies and returning to Aruba.

Among them is one of Aruba’s top graduates from last year, who traveled to the Netherlands to pursue higher education. However, the student encountered a major obstacle—being unable to find any available room to live in, not even a small one.

At first, the student managed to stay temporarily with friends, but that could not continue. The academic year went on, yet the student still had no permanent housing.

Families back in Aruba are also feeling the pressure. In some cases, parents had to place their children in hotels temporarily, paying as much as €3,000 for just ten days—an amount that is clearly unsustainable.

Students have registered everywhere possible to get a place on waiting lists for rooms, but without success. They are actively walking the streets, looking for any sign that says “Room for Rent,” but nothing turns up. The stress and uncertainty are taking a toll on their mental health and focus.

One student, who has been without housing since July 2025, continues to search desperately for a place to live.

The situation in the Netherlands has changed drastically compared to ten years ago. For Aruban students, it’s disheartening—despite their motivation and good academic performance, they feel abandoned. Many say the Arubahuis and even the Minister Plenipotentiary have not provided any meaningful support.

“I want to continue studying, but under these conditions, I can’t go on,” said one student.
Parents and students alike are calling for help—but so far, there’s no solution in sight.
