Union President Denounces Unnecessary Persecution and Punishment of Airport Workers

President of the STA Union, has raised serious concerns about what he describes as unnecessary persecution and punishment of workers, particularly within the security department of Aruba’s Reina Beatrix International Airport.

De Cuba stated that the union recently met with Mr. James Fazio, Interim Chief Executive Officer of the airport, to discuss the current labor situation. He emphasized that as the year comes to an end, it is important for employees to have peace at work and not live in fear of losing their jobs.

According to De Cuba, several supervisors are responsible for unfair treatment toward employees. He also claimed that at least 13 articles of the collective labor agreement have been violated, and STA has presented evidence to support these allegations.

“When workers feel uncomfortable, they come to STA because they know we don’t play games. If we must take action, we will, but we also have to think carefully, as the airport is vital to Aruba’s economy,” De Cuba stated.

The union previously sent a detailed letter to Mr. Fazio outlining all the issues that have occurred and are still ongoing. Copies were also sent to Minister Wendrick Cicilia and the airport’s board, ensuring all parties are aware of the situation.

STA intends to make a new formal request to the ministry, as some matters require higher-level attention. De Cuba mentioned that although Mr. Fazio is a practical person who seeks solutions, some issues might be beyond his authority.

The union expects to hold another meeting with Mr. Fazio within the coming week, pending confirmation of the date.
