Magaly Brito, General Secretary of SEPPA:
“They will no longer accept the story of ‘no plates'”
ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Magaly Brito, General Secretary of the Public and Private Employees Union (SEPPA), in an interview with DIARIO, discussed the ongoing labor strike at Arubus, related to their salary structure. She addressed the issue of employees no longer accepting the excuse that “there are no plates” as a reason for the situation.
Brito expressed that SEPPA has been fighting for this issue for many years. While there has been some progress, discussions about the salary structure began under the previous minister, who, upon leaving office, indicated to SEPPA and Arubus that the proposals on the table could be agreed upon. As the sole shareholder, the minister was supposed to make provisions in the budget, and SEPPA has been waiting for this to happen.
“We all know the situation and the circumstances from past years. At that time, the government had to step down, and we had to wait for the new government to come in so that we could continue on this matter. The new government must show responsibility and allocate the necessary funds to finalize the agreement between SEPPA and Arubus,” Brito stated.
However, SEPPA has recently made multiple attempts with the current minister to make the funds available, only to be told repeatedly that “there are no plates” and that the surplus is just an excuse.
“But we know how politicians love to align their roles, and just last week, the Finance Minister indicated that the surplus was available, but then the government leaders shout that this is thanks to the hard work and contributions of the workers. The Arubus workers were also part of this contribution, but their share was taken from their salary. They can no longer accept the constant excuse of ‘no plates,'” Brito pointed out.
