Single Police Officer Fatal Shot

single police officer fired fatal shot appears to have been fired in the case involving the death of 19‑year‑old Ayden C.J. Lanoy, a court hearing revealed.

The serious case, which took place February 9, 2025, was the focus of lengthy testimony in court on Thursday morning. An investigation into the incident — where two police officers fired at a vehicle — shows that one of the shots likely struck and killed Lanoy.

Video Evidence Presented in Court

The judge allowed surveillance video from the shooting to be shown in open court. Before the public session, the judge met privately with Lanoy’s family members, the officers’ attorneys, and the officers. Afterward, the video was played in the courtroom.

The footage shows a Toyota vehicle and a police patrol vehicle arriving at an intersection near Santa Cruz where the road ends. The Toyota appears to turn and stop near a police car blocking the road; then the vehicle rolls backward.

Both officers exit the patrol car with weapons drawn. One officer, identified as M.V., stands in front of the vehicle, and the other, R.G.D., stands to the side. While there is no audio, the video appears to show multiple shots being fired.

Conflicting Accounts

Investigators believe the first shot was fired as the vehicle moved backward, but police defense lawyers disagree. The judge noted that both officers are seen on video firing at the vehicle. M.V. testified that he fired three shots, while R.G.D. testified that he saw the vehicle moving toward M.V.

Technical analysis presented in court indicates significant bullet impacts on the rear side of the vehicle. One of these impacts struck Lanoy in the right thorax. The bullet passed through a major artery, causing fatal blood loss.

After the incident, Lanoy was found gravely injured. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he later died.

Officer Testimony

Officer M.V. stated he never expected a situation where the use of a firearm would result in a person’s death and said the memory of the incident weighs on him daily. Officer R.G.D. described the case as something he thinks about constantly and expressed regret that a law enforcement situation resulted in a loss of life.

Impact and Public Reaction

Lanoy was widely described as a respectful young man who worked at Save More in Boegoeroei and had competed with musical talent in his school’s Voz‑i‑Landia event in 2019. His death sparked protests against police brutality, including demonstrations in Aruba and even one organized in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

According to the court’s preliminary findings, evidence suggests that a single police officer fired the fatal shot that struck Ayden Lanoy. The investigation and trial continue as questions remain over the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation.
