Sedentary Lifestyle Causes More Deaths Than Smoking, Says Aruba Chiropractor

A sedentary lifestyle causes more deaths than smoking, according to Aruba-based chiropractor Dr. Renato van Putten, who is warning the community about the serious health risks linked to lack of physical activity.

In an interview with Matutino DIARIO, Dr. van Putten emphasized that prolonged sitting, limited movement, and inactive daily routines have become one of the biggest threats to public health in Aruba.

“Our culture is very sedentary,” he explained. “People work, go home, eat, drink, and sleep. Exercise is often not part of the routine. About 70% of lower back problems are linked to lifestyle choices, while only 30% are hereditary.”

Dr. van Putten added that exercising only once or twice a week is not enough if a person spends long hours sitting every day. “Sitting for 10 hours a day cancels out those gym sessions. Sedentary behavior is more dangerous than smoking. More people die from sitting too much than from smoking itself.”

He stressed the importance of regular movement and daily physical activity to reduce health risks and improve overall well-being.
