Early Sunday morning around 3:30 a.m., police responded urgently to a serious traffic accident in front of the San Francisco di Asis Pro-Cathedral in Playa, after reports that a person was unresponsive at the scene.
Preliminary information indicated that the incident involved a collision between a scooter (brommer) and a cyclist. At first, authorities believed one of the individuals showed no signs of life. According to initial findings, an elderly man, who may have been under the influence of alcohol, entered the road directly in front of the scooter.
Upon impact, the scooter struck the cyclist and caught fire, burning completely. The fire department and two ambulances arrived quickly at the scene. Although it was initially feared that the cyclist had died, it was later confirmed that he was alive. The elderly man, who was found on the sidewalk, gradually regained consciousness while police and paramedics communicated with him.
During questioning, the cyclist stated that he lives in San Nicolas and believed he had been hit by a car. The scooter rider sustained more serious injuries than the cyclist and was transported to the hospital for further medical treatment.
Authorities believe the scooter may have ignited at the moment of impact, possibly caused by a spark. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
