The Noord baseball field arson arrest took place early Thursday morning after police detained two young suspects accused of setting fire to artificial turf at a sports field in Noord.
Authorities reported that officers from the Noord police patrol responded to a report of a large fire at the baseball field located above Centro di Bario Noord.
Police Catch Suspects Fleeing Scene
Upon arriving at the location, officers involved in the Noord baseball field arson arrest noticed two individuals running away from the area. Police immediately pursued the suspects and successfully detained them nearby.
The suspects were identified as two youths approximately 17 years old, who had attempted to flee from the sports field located above La Nuena Fondue Grill.
Artificial Turf Set on Fire
During the Noord baseball field arson arrest, police discovered items in the suspects’ possession that were allegedly used to start the fire.
Investigators believe the youths intentionally set fire to the artificial turf used for sports activities at the baseball field. The synthetic grass is considered an essential part of the sports facility and represents a significant investment.
Firefighters from the Aruba Fire Department quickly arrived at the scene and worked to control the blaze. Despite their efforts, the fire caused extensive damage to the artificial turf surface.
Suspects Taken Into Custody
Following the Noord baseball field arson arrest, both suspects were taken into custody and transported to a police station on suspicion of vandalism and arson-related offenses.
Authorities indicated that if the suspects are confirmed to be minors, their parents or guardians may be held financially responsible for the damages, which could include the cost of removing the destroyed turf and installing new artificial grass.
The incident has raised concerns because artificial sports surfaces are expensive to replace and play an important role in supporting community sports activities.
Police continue to investigate the Noord baseball field arson arrest to determine the full circumstances surrounding the fire and the extent of the damage
