Minister of Justice, Arthur Dowers, recently visited several key justice facilities across Aruba, with a particular focus on the northern part of the island. His inspections included the Police School, Savaneta Police Ward, the Operations Command Center, and the Aruba Correctional Institution (KIA).
During his visit, it was discovered that two of the four facilities are in total disrepair. The condition of the Aruba Correctional Institution (KIA) is especially alarming, with the prison in a deplorable state, increasing the urgency for action. Minister Dowers spoke with staff members and other stakeholders, observing the low motivation among employees, which he attributed to the difficult working conditions that place heavy physical, mental, and health-related pressure on them.
Despite claims by the previous government of a budget surplus, many challenges remain within the justice departments. Minister Dowers emphasized that the government must take responsibility for addressing these issues, not only the structural problems of the buildings but also organizational challenges that hinder efficiency within these institutions.
The minister underscored the importance of strengthening management processes and streamlining workflows to improve the functioning of the justice system. This visit highlights the urgent need for reforms to improve both infrastructure and working conditions in Aruba’s justice system.
