Local Spotlight – Meet Miss Aruba, Nurianne Helder

As part of our new “Spotlight on a Local” series, we are proud to shine the light on an inspiring young woman representing the heart and spirit of Aruba: Nurianne Arias Helder, Miss Aruba 2018 and our island’s contender for the 68th Miss World pageant in Sanya, China.

💙 A Heart for Service from the Start

From a young age, Nurianne has always put others first. As a little girl, instead of asking for candy, she’d ask her mother for coins to buy food for a homeless man on their walk. Her compassion for others has only grown stronger with time.

At school, she took leadership roles seriously — becoming president of the Key Club and later the PR Director of Circle K at the University of Aruba. Her mission was always clear: to serve her community.

⚕️ A Personal Battle with Diabetes

In her third year at university, Nurianne faced a life-altering diagnosis: Type 1 diabetes. Hospitalized with dangerously high blood sugar levels, she found herself needing help for the first time. Yet even during this ordeal, her biggest concern was completing her internship and community commitments.

She emerged from the experience stronger, armed with resilience and a renewed sense of purpose. Tragically, soon after her recovery, she lost her beloved grandmother to leukemia. Seeking space to heal, Nurianne spent a transformative year studying in the Netherlands — a chapter that deepened her strength and self-awareness.

👑 A Purpose-Driven Journey to Miss World

Initially hesitant, Nurianne was encouraged by a friend to enter the Miss Aruba pageant. Upon learning about “Beauty with a Purpose”, the community service initiative at the core of Miss World, she realized the pageant aligned perfectly with her lifelong passion for helping others.

Though originally chosen for Miss Universe, Nurianne expressed her wish to represent Aruba in Miss World, and thanks to the support of organizers and her fellow contestant Kimberly Julsing, the titles were switched — allowing her to pursue the path she truly believed in.

💫 Representing Aruba with Grace

Now in China, competing alongside 117 contestants, Nurianne carries more than a crown — she carries the hopes, pride, and love of her island. With her kindness, intelligence, and unshakable determination, she is showing the world the true spirit of Aruba.

Follow her journey and cheer her on via her Facebook and Instagram profiles — Aruba is behind her all the way!
