February 2025 Tourism in Aruba: Visitor Dip Linked to Leap Year Shift

VIEWS

Aruba’s tourism sector experienced a slight downturn in February 2025, largely due to the absence of an extra leap year day. In contrast to February 2024, which benefited from 29 days, the shorter month this year led to a 3.5% decline in visitor arrivals, equating to 6,589 fewer tourists.

Visitor Arrival Trends at a Glance

  • February 2024: 241,343 arrivals
  • February 2025: 240,347 arrivals (-0.4%)

This marginal year-over-year dip was primarily time-based rather than demand-driven, but it still influenced key market segments and performance indicators.

Performance by Market Region

  • North America: 191,280 visitors (-2.5%)
  • South America: 33,484 visitors (+21.9%)
  • Europe: 10,776 visitors (-12.6%)

While North American and European markets dipped, South America emerged as a bright spot, showing significant year-on-year growth. This suggests growing interest in Aruba from new and developing tourism markets.

Accommodation Metrics & Stay Duration

The total number of nights stayed in Aruba saw mixed results across accommodation types:

  • All-Inclusive Resorts: 209,666 nights (-8.6%)
  • Timeshare Stays: 466,912 nights (-7.6%)
  • Other Lodgings: 752,515 nights (+1.2%)

A slight drop in the average length of stay was noted, particularly among traditional vacation segments. However, smaller-scale lodging options gained traction, suggesting evolving traveler preferences.

Spending Patterns & Revenue Growth

Despite fewer visitors, tourist spending surged, reflecting Aruba’s growing appeal among premium travelers:

  • Average Spend per Visitor: AWG 2,874.70 (+19% YoY)
  • Total Tourism Revenue: USD 28,499,004

This increase in economic impact reinforces Aruba’s position as a high-value destination, even amid minor fluctuations in arrival figures.

Travel by Air and Sea

Top Airlines by Passenger Volume:

  • JetBlue Airways: 45,180 passengers (-13.2%)
  • American Airlines: 41,936 passengers (-6.5%)
  • Delta Airlines: 35,990 passengers (+2.4%)

Cruise Sector Insights:

  • February 2024: 251,760 passengers
  • February 2025: 235,182 passengers (-6.6%)
  • Cruise Ship Calls: 94 (-3.09%)

Cruise tourism also reflected the leap year impact, with slightly fewer ship calls and lower passenger volumes.

Outlook: Shifting Toward Value and Opportunity

While overall arrival numbers dipped slightly, spending per visitor reached new highs, signaling a growing shift toward quality over quantity in Aruba’s tourism strategy. Additionally, the notable growth from South American markets presents a valuable opportunity to diversify Aruba’s tourist base and reinforce its resilience in a dynamic global landscape.
