ORANJESTAD – A tragic workplace accident claimed the life of 53-year-old Sigmond Volk, a Curaçao-born construction worker, on Tuesday afternoon in Aruba. The incident occurred during a building project on Avenida Nelson Orlando Oduber, where Volk was employed by a subcontractor specializing in steel structure installations.
The accident took place around 4:00 p.m. as workers were installing a concrete floor on the first level of the structure. Reports indicate that one of the floor’s support points failed, causing it to collapse and strike Volk beneath. Emergency responders, including police and paramedics, arrived quickly, but despite resuscitation attempts, Volk was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. The Forensic Investigation Unit of the Aruba Police Department is leading the inquiry, while officials from the Aruba Directorate of Supervision and Inspection (DTI) conducted their own on-site assessment.
Support services have been extended to Volk’s family following the tragic loss, as the community comes to terms with this fatal workplace incident.
