ORANJESTAD (AAN):
DIARIO Morning Edition recently interviewed Dr. Renato Van Putten, the first chiropractor to introduce chiropractic care in Aruba in 1990, who now places a stronger focus on treating lumbar spine issues in older adults at Chiropractic Clinic Van Putten.
Dr. Van Putten studied at Colegio Arubano, graduating in 1984, before traveling abroad to pursue pre-medical studies in the United States. He attended Oral Roberts University, where he actively practiced judo and personally experienced a lower back injury that changed the course of his career.
“At that time, I wasn’t familiar with the chiropractic profession. In Aruba, chiropractic care was not yet known. While in the U.S., I came into contact with chiropractic treatment and saw how effective it was for lower back problems. That’s what sparked my interest,” Van Putten explained.
Motivated by this experience, he enrolled at Logan College of Chiropractic, where he completed an intensive eight-year academic journey. The program included four years of pre-medical studies followed by four years of chiropractic education across twelve trimesters.
In the early years of his career, Dr. Van Putten focused heavily on sports chiropractic, working with athletes and traveling with national teams to events such as the Central American Games, Olympic-related activities, and baseball competitions.
“As you get older, your interests naturally evolve,” he said. “You begin to look at the health challenges people your own age are facing and how you can best serve them.”
He noted that degenerative lower back problems are now the most common issue among older adults, largely due to modern lifestyles.
“We sit too much. Most jobs today require long hours behind a computer. Over time, this leads to lower back wear and tear. Neck pain and arm-related issues are also very common,” Van Putten explained.
He emphasized how the workforce has changed dramatically over the past 30 years.
“When I first started, about 80% of my patients had physically demanding jobs — carpenters, mechanics, construction workers, casino employees. Today, it’s the opposite: 80% work in offices, and only 20% are physically active in their jobs.”
Dr. Van Putten continues to adapt his treatments and exercise programs to meet the needs of Aruba’s aging population, focusing on mobility, pain management, and long-term spinalслан health.
More from this in-depth interview with Dr. Renato Van Putten will be published in the next edition of DIARIO.
