The book launch of “Turning the Tide: Climate Change, Social Change, and Islandness” will take place on March 2, 2026, at 7:00 PM in the Faculty Lounge (Room 201) of the Main Building at the University of Prince Edward Island.
This groundbreaking collection of essays, published by Island Studies Press, brings together global island voices to discuss the intersection of climate change, social change, and the unique challenges faced by island communities. The launch will feature a panel discussion with co-editors Jean Mitchell and Laurie Brinklow from the University of Prince Edward Island, local contributors, and co-editor Eric Mijts from the University of Aruba, as well as islands researcher Anouk Mertens, who will join the conversation virtually.
The panel will explore diverse topics, such as how art bridges the gap between climate change and social change, the unique energy challenges faced by remote islands, and the role of local and Indigenous knowledge in resilient food systems. The conversation will also delve into islanders’ perspectives on the effects of climate change, social relations on climate-stressed islands, and how governance structures can either support or hinder climate and social justice efforts.
This interdisciplinary collection focuses on island storytellers and highlights the worldviews, knowledge, cultural values, and emotions often missing from traditional climate change discourses.
The event is free and open to the public, with all invited to attend. For more information, contact Bren Simmers at Island Studies Press at 902-566-0386 or via email at ispstaff@upei.ca.
