Aruba Sees 5.3% Tourism Growth in May 2025, Driven by South American and Cruise Markets

Aruba continues to build momentum as a top Caribbean destination, recording a 5.3% increase in stay-over arrivals for May 2025, reaching 117,125 visitors. This growth brings the year-to-date total to 635,965 arrivals, a 3.4% rise compared to the same period last year.

South America Leads Growth Surge

Visitor numbers from South America rose 20.1%, with standout increases from:

  • Argentina: up 155.6% (3,979 visitors)

  • Brazil: up 51.8%

  • Uruguay & Paraguay: both posting 40%+ growth

Strategic airlift expansions and regional marketing have clearly paid off.

Cruise Tourism Exceeds Forecasts

May also saw a 36.6% increase in cruise passengers, totaling 47,361 visitors, thanks to seven additional cruise calls. This surge supports Aruba’s projection of 910,174 cruise arrivals for 2025.

Visitor Spending Hits $201M in Q1

Visa data revealed that international cardholders spent over US$201 million in Q1 2025, an 8.8% year-over-year boost. Key spend categories included:

  • Restaurants & Dining: $58.1M (+11.2%)

  • Hotels & Lodging: $49.6M (+12.8%)

  • Retail: $43.3M

The average spend per visitor reached $679.

North America Still Leads, Canada Surges

North America made up 78.4% of May arrivals:

  • USA: up 1.7%

  • Canada: up 41.3%, rising from 2,862 to 4,045 visitors

New flights and travel deals are credited for Canada’s significant boost.

European and Generational Trends

European arrivals grew 7.6%, with gains from:

  • Italy: +50.7%

  • Sweden: +65.7%

  • Switzerland: +14.5%

While smaller in numbers, European travelers tend to stay longer and spend more.

A generational shift is also taking shape:

  • Gen Z travelers: up 13.2%

  • Gen A (children): up 17.0%
This points to a rise in multigenerational travel and early brand loyalty to Aruba.

Hospitality Sector Rebounds

  • Visitor nights: 730,405 in May (+2.5%)

  • Hotel occupancy: 52.9% (up from 51.8%)

  • Average Daily Rate (ADR): $277 (vs. $274 in May 2024)

Economic and Classification Update

The Central Bank of Aruba has reclassified timeshare income as part of “Travel Services,” contributing to a 16% increase in tourism credits, totaling Afl. 4,030.9 million in Q1–Q3 2024.

Looking Ahead

Aruba’s robust performance in May confirms rising confidence in the destination, especially from Latin America and Canada. With strong spending trends and growing family travel, Aruba’s tourism sector is on a healthy trajectory heading into the second half of the year.
