Minister of Justice Warns About Children at Carnival Parades

VIEWS

Minister of Justice, Mr. Drs. Arthur Dowers, has expressed serious concern over the alarming presence of young children and even babies during Carnival parades in Aruba, especially during the long and intensive events.

While Carnival is an important cultural event appreciated by many, the Minister highlighted that these circumstances can pose health and safety risks for young children, including exposure to loud noises, prolonged sun exposure, late-night hours, intense heat, insufficient hydration, and excessive fatigue.

During the most recent parades, several unsupervised children were observed, particularly when adults were consuming alcohol irresponsibly. Minister Dowers emphasized that parents have a legal responsibility for the well-being and safety of their children. According to the Aruba Penal Code and regulations related to child protection, endangering a child’s health or safety is punishable by law. In serious cases, this could result in criminal prosecution, fines, or other legal measures.

While Carnival should remain a celebration, the Minister stressed it should never come at the cost of children’s safety and health. Children, especially the younger ones, should not be in situations marked by extreme heat, loud noise, or prolonged exposure without protection or proper supervision.

The Minister called on parents and organizers to take responsibility and make informed decisions, including:

  • Not taking very young children to extended parades.

  • Ensuring access to sufficient water, shade, and rest.

  • Moderating alcohol consumption, especially when responsible for a child.

  • Not driving under the influence.

  • Always prioritizing the child’s well-being.

This coming weekend, Aruba will celebrate the final two major parades of the season, and it’s a time for joy and togetherness with friends and family. However, the Minister called for responsible celebrations with respect for others.
