What started as a personal leap of faith turned into a powerful community-driven event on the shores of Aruba. Thomas Welle, Head of Partnerships for the upcoming WOW! nature film, recently helped organize a sold-out art auction in support of the project, bringing together artists, donors, and environmental advocates from across the island.
When Thomas relocated to Aruba from the Netherlands with his wife Femke and their two young children, he wasn’t sure what his new role would be. While his wife took up a medical post at the island’s hospital, Thomas sought meaningful work. What he found was purpose through WOW! – a film initiative aiming to spotlight the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Dutch Caribbean islands, while raising awareness and responsibility for their preservation.
Through a chance meeting with Bianca, one of WOW!’s founders, Thomas joined the team to lead partnerships and funding efforts. Together with co-founder Elton, they pitched to local businesses and organizations, eventually securing enough support to bring their vision to life.
To help fund the production, the team hosted a unique beachfront art auction featuring original works created or donated by local artists. The event, attended by around 100 guests—including Aruba’s governor—was not only a fundraiser but a celebration of community and purpose. Proceeds from the auction went directly to supporting the WOW! project, while artists were fairly compensated for their contributions.
For Thomas, taking the auctioneer’s gavel for the first time was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating. But the shared energy in the room, the cause, and the support of the island community made the moment unforgettable. What began as a question of “What will I do in Aruba?” turned into a powerful example of the difference one person can make—especially when art, environment, and purpose intersect.
