ORANJESTAD (AAN): In a recent interview with DIARIO, Dalgis Montalvo of Stichting Hunto emphasized the importance of taking a more proactive approach to Addiction and Suicide Prevention in Aruba. Montalvo highlighted that many individuals facing addiction problems or suicidal thoughts often feel trapped and unable to find a way out. She urged that communities, families, organizations, and the Government must play a more active role in preventing and addressing these issues.
According to Montalvo, addiction is a growing problem in Aruba, especially among young people, who also face justice-related issues for various reasons. Many young people and adults suffer from depression and anxiety but don’t know how to manage these challenges. The issue is worsened by the lack of support from parents, family members, or other social structures. These factors all contribute to the problem, with each case requiring different types of guidance and intervention.
Stichting Hunto strongly believes that prevention is key, alongside expanding the professional team to act quickly before the situation escalates. The foundation insists that Addiction and Suicide Prevention in Aruba must be a top priority to protect and guide those in need.
Montalvo also pointed out that the foundation is seeing an increasing number of new individuals, mainly young people, seeking help. She noted that many young people struggle to cope with the difficulties they face and often can’t find the proper guidance. As a result, they often lose hope and make drastic decisions instead of seeking help. This alarming trend is a signal that if not urgently addressed, it may continue to grow within Aruba’s society.
