A New Kind of Hospitality Emerging in Aruba

Every so often, a conversation leaves a lasting impression. That’s what happened when Lincoln D. Gomez met Shareska Gutierrez (36), Director of Commercial Strategy at Radisson Blu Aruba — one of the island’s most forward-thinking resorts redefining what hospitality means today.

From the moment it opened during the uncertain pandemic days of 2021, Radisson Blu Aruba introduced more than just a new property — it introduced a new philosophy.

A Fairer System for Staff

Instead of channeling service charges into hotel revenue, the resort created a monthly staff bonus pool that prioritizes fairness. Employees in lower-paying roles, like housekeeping or maintenance, receive a larger share, while senior leaders receive less.

“This system supports the people who need it most,” Shareska explained.

The results speak volumes — staff retention is at an all-time high, with virtually no need to advertise positions. Employees feel valued, well-compensated, and genuinely invested in their workplace.

Leadership That Inspires

At the helm is General Manager Luigi Wix (41), recently named General Manager of the Year by Choice Hotels International, a global company with over 7,500 properties. Under his leadership, Radisson Blu Aruba has won the Ring of Honor Award two years in a row, ranking it among the top 1% of hotels across the Choice Hotels network.

The secret? A 100% locally led management team — including Shareska — proving that Aruban professionals are not only ready for leadership, but excelling on the world stage.

Local Talent on the Rise

This shift isn’t limited to one resort. Jonathan Werleman (35), newly appointed Director of Food & Beverage at The Ritz-Carlton Aruba, is another shining example. With 15 years of global hospitality experience — including leadership roles with Holland America Line, Hilton Aruba, and Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort — Jonathan embodies Aruba’s growing pool of world-class local talent.

Together, leaders like Luigi, Shareska, and Jonathan represent a new era of confidence in Aruba’s hospitality industry — one where locals aren’t just participating, but leading.

Celebrating Excellence Across the Industry

Just last night, the AHATA Excellence Awards 2025 took place at The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba, honoring 38 outstanding professionals whose dedication continues to elevate the island’s hospitality standards. The awards featured custom cocolishi-shaped trophies designed by local artist Gilbert Senchi, symbolizing the warmth and resilience of Aruba’s tourism spirit.

A Model Worth Following

As Gomez reflects, Aruba’s hospitality transformation isn’t just about architecture or tourism numbers — it’s about people. By prioritizing fair pay, local leadership, and long-term investment, resorts like Radisson Blu Aruba and The Ritz-Carlton are setting a model worth emulating.

Innovation doesn’t always come from technology. Sometimes, it comes from the simple choice to do better by people — and Aruba is leading that change beautifully.
