Nestled beneath the turquoise waters off Aruba’s northwestern coast lies the SS Antilla, a colossal German freighter turned coral-encrusted reef. Scuttled in 1940 during World War II, the Antilla has since transformed into one of the Caribbean’s most captivating dive and snorkel sites. Its rich history, vibrant marine life, and accessible location make it a must-visit for underwater enthusiasts.

A Brief History of the SS Antilla

Launched in 1939, the SS Antilla was a 400-foot cargo ship built by the Hamburg America Line. Designed for trade between Germany and the Caribbean, it featured advanced turbo-electric transmission systems. However, its commercial journey was short-lived.

With the onset of World War II, the Antilla sought refuge in the neutral Dutch waters of Aruba. On May 10, 1940, following Germany’s invasion of the Netherlands, Dutch marines attempted to seize the ship. To prevent its capture, the crew scuttled the vessel by opening seacocks and setting fires aboard. The Antilla sank in Malmok Bay, where it rests to this day.

Accessibility and Conditions

The Antilla lies on its port side in approximately 60 feet (18 meters) of water, with parts of the ship reaching as shallow as 5 feet below the surface. This makes it accessible to both snorkelers and divers. The wreck is located about 550 meters from Boca Catalina Beach and is typically reached by boat.

Marine Life and Coral Growth

Over the decades, the Antilla has become an artificial reef teeming with marine life. Divers and snorkelers can encounter:

  • Tube sponges and coral formations adorning the ship’s structure.
  • Tropical fish, including blue tangs and parrotfish.
  • Lobsters, shrimp, and moray eels hiding in crevices.
  • Sea turtles and barracudas gliding through the waters.

Snorkeling and Diving Experience

The Antilla offers a unique experience for both snorkelers and divers:

Snorkelers can explore the ship’s bow and upper structures, which are closest to the surface and rich in marine life.

Divers can delve deeper into the wreck, exploring the cargo holds and interior sections. However, due to structural deterioration, penetration diving is discouraged for safety reasons.

Capturing the Moment: Photography Opportunities

The Antilla’s combination of historical intrigue and vibrant marine ecosystems makes it a photographer’s paradise. The interplay of sunlight filtering through the water illuminates the ship’s structure, creating dramatic visuals. Schools of fish, colorful corals, and the ship’s massive hull provide endless subjects for underwater photography.
