Haitian Community Deserves Fair and Humane Treatment, Says MP Rocco Tjon

Member of Parliament Rocco Tjon has called for fairer treatment of Aruba’s Haitian community, emphasizing their vital contribution to the island’s economy. His statement comes following a meeting with a group of Haitian residents who raised ongoing concerns about immigration and family reunification barriers.

Tjon revealed that many Haitians face difficulties obtaining or renewing residence permits, as well as bringing close family members—such as parents or children—for short visits or vacations.

“These are people who live and work legally in Aruba, contributing to our society every day. They deserve a humane and just process,” he stated.

According to Tjon, delays and a lack of response from DIMAS (Department of Integration, Management and Admission of Foreigners) have left many in emotional distress. “In many cases, DIMAS requests documents that are nearly impossible to obtain due to the severe crisis in Haiti. And even when all documents are submitted, many applicants still do not receive answers,” he added.

Tjon has formally submitted questions to Minister Glenbert Dowers seeking clarity on the current situation. “I want to know what concrete actions are being taken to address this ongoing struggle faced by our Haitian brothers and sisters,” he said.

The MP reaffirmed his support for the Haitian community and stressed the need for immigration procedures that reflect compassion, efficiency, and respect for human dignity.
