Caribbean Slavery History Grants Launch August 2025 to Support Cultural Healing

A significant new funding initiative aimed at preserving the Caribbean’s slavery history and fostering community healing will launch on August 11, 2025. The Dutch government has introduced a specialized grant programme to support local projects that address the transatlantic slavery legacy, as part of its commitment to justice, recognition, and cultural restoration.

The Caribbean slavery history grants are part of a broader effort following the Netherlands’ formal apology in 2022 for its role in slavery. With a focus on small and medium organizations, the programme ensures accessibility through a simplified application process and clear eligibility guidelines.

Key Grant Details:

  • Launch Date: August 11, 2025

  • Initial Focus: Organizational development

  • Funding:

    • $10,000 for Caribbean-based organizations

    • €5,000 for organizations in the European Netherlands

Eight application rounds will run through 2028, with future rounds expanding to cover education, commemorative events, cultural awareness, and trauma healing.

The programme was developed in consultation with Caribbean communities, ensuring grassroots voices shaped the structure. Administered by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment’s “Uitvoering Van Beleid,” the initiative promises transparency and a strong focus on community outcomes.

Minister Uitermark emphasized that this is more than acknowledging the past—it’s about building a future with justice and inclusion at its core. By offering practical support to initiatives such as local museums, art programs, educational projects, and storytelling festivals, these grants provide powerful tools to reclaim identity and honor memory.

Educational sessions will be held across the Caribbean and the European Netherlands to guide applicants through the process.

This initiative marks a historic opportunity to turn past injustice into purposeful progress, empowering Caribbean communities to lead healing and heritage efforts from within.
